A flamboyant flight captain, Vikrant Khanna, who hasn’t rested properly for days takes on a Dubai to Kochin flight along with the first officer (second pilot) Tanya Albuquerque. At first, everything is fine but bad weather changes create a chaotic situation.
Vikrant, who is sharp-minded and always confident about his risky calculations, takes such a decision that it almost causes a disastrous end to his flight carrying 150 passengers. Investigating officer Narayan Vedant then comes into the picture. Known for his investigating skills, Narayan gathers a lot of proofs that might land Vikrant in big trouble.
What’s going to happen next? Who’s going to win, Vikrant or Narayan? Runway 34 answers it all.
Ajay Devgn as captain Vikrant Khanna delivers an effortless act. His confidence and subtle look make him believable as a celebrated dynamic flight captain. As usual, his dialogue delivery is bang on. Intense scenes seem like a cakewalk for him.
Rakul Preet Singh delivers a stand out performance as first officer Tanya Albuquerque. Without going over the top, she maintains a subtleness. You can literally feel the helplessness and panic in her expressions without making it too loud. This could be termed her career-best performance.
Amitabh Bachchan as Narayan Vedant is simply brilliant. He’s energetic and looks intimidating when needed. There’s only one problem that we have seen Big B in such roles at least a couple of times (Pink and Badla). It feels repetitive at some moments.
Boman Irani as an owner of airlines has only a small part to play but does justice to his character.
Runway 34 is 2 hours 28 minutes long and with a basic story in hand, it’s a tough job to keep viewers engaged. But here, the writing and screenplay do enough to keep the audience glued to their seats. In fact, some scenes give you a complete adrenaline rush, especially the one before the interval. Post interval, at places it feels that the film is losing its pace, but again picks up in no time.
Not just as an actor but Ajay Devgn has also delivered as a director. With such an intense subject at hand, Ajay doesn’t lose his focus and keeps it clinical. Even leading characters are established well. You can literally feel the tension in scenes featuring chaos in a flight. A face-off between Ajay and Amitabh Bachchan lives up to the expectations and it’s a treat to watch.
There are just a couple of songs in the film that blends well with the narrative. The cinematographer and VFX team too deserve applause for their brilliant work.
Runway 34 is worth a watch and is a good refreshing change from Bollywood and a perfect Eidi. At a time when the South is overtaking the market in the Hindi belt, Bollywood needs such films to stay in the race!
