Suriya’s highly-anticipated magnum opus, Kanguva, has turned out to be one of the biggest disasters in the history of Kollywood. Made on a huge budget, the film failed to earn even a respectable collection at the worldwide box office and wrapped up below 110 crores. Both in India and overseas, it turned out to be a big failure. In India, it stayed below the 75 crore mark (net collection) and overseas, it remained below 25 crore (gross collection). Directed by Siva, the Kollywood fantasy action drama received mostly negative reviews from critics. Even among ticket-buying audiences, it fared with poor word-of-mouth, thus pushing the film into darkness. While the film failed to perform big in Tamil, even the Hindi version didn’t shine despite the presence of Bobby Deol and Disha Patani.
Made on a colossal budget of 350 crores, Kanguva was an underperformer from the word go. It failed to generate the hype that is needed for an event film. As a result, a start of only 24 crores came on the board, and during the opening week, 64.37 crores came in. Due to poor word-of-mouth, the film failed to make it big and wrapped up its run at 70.39 crore net at the Indian box office. Inclusive of taxes, it closed at 83.06 crore gross.
Overseas, too, Kanguva tanked miserably and wrapped up at just 24.14 crore gross. Combining it with the Indian box office, the final collection of the film stands at 107.20 crore gross.
Worldwide collection breakdown of the Suriya starrer:
- India net- 70.39 crores
- India gross- 83.06 crores
- Overseas gross- 24.14 crores
- Worldwide gross- 107.20 crores
