The period of late 2023-2024 has seen re-releases like no other, across Tollywood and Kollywood. Fans, especially 90s kids, have been flocking to the theatres to relive their childhood memories and enjoy the experience which seems to rekindle nostalgia like no other. The latest addition to this list is Thalapathy Vijay’s Ghilli, which has registered record-breaking numbers at the worldwide box office.
This year, this re-release saga started with Vaaranam Aayiram, 3, Siva Manasula Sakthi, and several other films. Most of these have run for weeks, with people dancing and singing and turning the whole affair into a celebration. Fans have also taken to social media and recorded reels to show how much they’re enjoying seeing their favorite actors in their much younger avatars.
On Saturday, Thalapathy Vijay’s Ghilli followed suit. The 2004 blockbuster, a remake of Mahesh Babu’s Okkadu (2003) is one of the biggest movies of Vijay’s career.
Over time, ‘Thalapathy’ Vijay has amassed a dedicated fan base and garnered widespread popularity among audiences. It was as a tribute to this enduring classic that fans of Vijay had organized a grand re-release of the film, aiming to re-live its magic on the big screen once more.
The anticipation for the re-release was palpable, with exceptional advance bookings indicating strong audience interest. As expected, the film enjoyed a remarkable opening day, amounting to an estimated 8 crores gross at the worldwide box office, setting a new record for re-releases in the country. Even actress Trisha proudly posted about it on her Instagram handle. This achievement reaffirms Thalapathy Vijay’s status as a true superstar in the hearts of his fans.
Further, Ghilli raked maintained a solid hold, and earned 4 crores gross. Again on Monday, the film earned 3 crores gross, thus pushing the global collection after 3 days at 15 crores gross. In the state of Tamil Nadu alone, the film has earned over 9 crores gross in three days.
