Eid usually means only one thing for Bollywood – a big-budget release that pulls audiences to theatres, with the presence of Salman Khan in it. But on Eid 2024, we were not graced with the release of a Bhai film. Instead, we got two new Bollywood Hindi films in the form of Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, a big-budget action thriller directed by Ali Abbas Zafar, starring Akshay Kumar and Tiger Shroff, and Maidaan, a sports drama featuring Ajay Devgn.
Both films have completed their extended opening week of 8 days, and the Bollywood box office verdict is here: both have turned out to be big disasters due to various reasons. Keep reading for all the deets on this recent Bollywood box office.
Let’s talk about Bade Miyan Chote Miyan first. Made on a crazy budget of 350 crores, the net box office earnings from India have only touched 50.15 crores, while the gross earnings within India reached 59.17 crores. Additionally, the movie made 27 crores in overseas gross revenue, resulting in a worldwide box office gross of just 86.16 crores.
Audiences have largely not accepted the film, despite its glamour and thoroughly choreographed action scenes. Industry outsiders have blamed a lack of disciplined promotions and inflated actors’ fees for the underwhelming performance of this Bollywood film. Bade Miyan Chote Miyan is also Akshay Kumar’s seventh flop at the Bollywood box office in the post-pandemic period. Presently, the entertainment news industry is abuzz with the question: Is it time for the actor to retire, or will he get his mojo back somehow?
Ajay Devgn’s latest Bollywood movie Maidaan also did not display great numbers at the Indian box office. The Indian Hindi-language biographical sports drama film is co-written and directed by Amit Ravindernath Sharma and produced by Akash Chawla, Arunava Joy Sengupta, Boney Kapoor, and Zee Studios.
Made on a budget of 100 crores, Maidaan depicts the inspiring journey of Syed Abdul Rahim, whose passion for football brought glory to India. The film also stars Priyamani, Gajraj Rao, and Rudranil Ghosh.
At the end of 8 days, the net revenue generated from India stood at 28.50 crores, with the domestic gross reaching 33.63 crores. Furthermore, the film made 7 crores in overseas gross earnings, culminating in a total worldwide gross of 40.63 crores. As we can see, this is a lukewarm performance at both the Indian box office as well as the global box office. Critics and audiences opined that they could not really connect with Ajay Devgn’s character, as they had with Shah Rukh Khan’s Kabir Khan in Chak De! India.
