Method acting is a route that isn’t often taken. Thankfully, here in Bollywood, we have actors like Aamir Khan, Ranveer Singh, Ranbir Kapoor and Randeep Hooda, who have delivered a world-class performance by taking this route. The aforementioned actors depicted the character by actually going through a long mental and physical transformation process. They lived the character in their real life too during the learning process.
Take a look at four performances that are milestones in Bollywood’s method acting:
Ranbir Kapoor as Sanjay Dutt
Ranbir Kapoor played the role of Sanjay Dutt in his biopic, Sanju. Ranbir’s acting prowess left everyone in awe. The audience said that Ranbir was more Sanju than Sanju himself. He impersonated Sanjay’s body language and behavior perfectly. Reportedly, Ranbir used to sit with Sanjay for hours and even call him in the middle of the night to learn about him.
Randeep Hooda as Sarabjit Singh
Sarabjit Singh was an Indian citizen who was detained in Pakistan under false allegations. Randeep Hooda’s portrayal of Sarabjit in the movie was haunting. He had to go through rigorous weight loss training to transform his body into a skeletal look. To make himself look like Sarabjit, Randeep lost 18 kgs in 28 days. He survived only on 500-600 calories per day.
It is also said that the actor caged himself in a dummy jail to experience a tiny bit of what Sarabjit experienced in reality. He tried to live with minimum food and chained himself with 2.5 kg handcuffs in each hand. Randeep’s Sarabjit performance redefined method acting in Bollywood.
Ranveer Singh as Allauddin Khilji
Ranveer Singh took everyone by surprise with his acting skills in Padmaavat. The actor received a lot of appreciation even from the critics for his excellence in the movie. He played the character of Mughal emperor Allaudin Khilji. The actor changed his body language and his tone of speaking to match the character of Khilji.
Ranveer shut himself from the world while prepping for his character. He remained only in contact with his cast and crew members. Khilji’s psyche was so negative that after playing his role, Ranveer had to seek the help of a psychiatrist to come out of the role of Khilji.
Aamir Khan as Mahavir Singh Phogat
In 2016, a biographical movie on the life of the Phogat family was made by Aamir Khan. In the movie, Khan played the role of the father of Indian wrestlers Geeta and Babita Phogat. In half of the film, he had to play the role of a fit wrestler, while in the other half he had to play the role of a 52-year-old overweight man. Apparently, Khan’s transformation from fit to fat and fat to fit took a year. While Aamir is known for undergoing drastic changes, his Dangal’s performance is his best in method acting.
