After enjoying love and appreciation from the Indian audience, Laapataa Ladies has made it to the big screen in Japan. Yes, last Friday, the film was released in Japan and the response has been superb. In fact, it exceeded expectations with its opening weekend numbers at the Japan box office and surpassed several Indian biggies. Directed by Kiran Rao, the film was originally released in theatres on March 1, 2024. It received a unanimously positive response from critics but failed to create a mark in terms of Indian box office collection. It earned 20.60 crores net during its run and was declared as an average affair. However, when it arrived on Netflix, it started getting its due. The film received praise from all around and was loved for its content. In fact, even outside India, it garnered love from the audience. In short, it got a much bigger exposure with OTT. Recently, it was also selected as India’s official entry in the Best International Feature Film category at this year’s Oscars, which will be held early next year.
On October 4, Laapataa Ladies was released in Japan and it took a flying start at the box office there. The opening weekend (October 4 to October 6) numbers are now out and it is learned that it raked in ¥9.32 million in the country during the opening weekend. After converting it from the Japanese yen to the Indian rupee, it equals 52.67 lakh. Through 24 locations it is running at, the film registered 6.5K admissions in the first three days.
In the process, it surpassed the opening weekend numbers of Tiger 3 (Â¥8.68 million or 49.14 lakh), Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (Â¥7 million or 39.62 lakh), Dangal (Â¥6.1 million or 34.47 lakh), and Brahmastra ((Â¥6 million or 33.97 lakh). On the whole, it registered the 7th biggest opening weekend for an Indian film at the Japanese box office. It’s a fantastic start, and with positive word-of-mouth coming into play, Laapataa Ladies is expected to reach new heights in the long run.
