Devara, starring Jr NTR in the lead role, has wrapped up its run at the worldwide box office, and now that the numbers are out, we can say that it underperformed in theatres. The numbers are good in isolation, but considering the costs involved and the scale of the film, the collection is lower than expected. Nonetheless, the Tollywood star has displayed his sheer stardom, as without any brand behind him, he has pulled off over 400 crores globally.
Jr NTR’s last film, RRR, was a big success globally and is considered to be a landmark film in Indian cinema. From such a success, both NTR and Ram Charan benefitted immensely. However, the main man who deserves the most credit was SS Rajamouli. As we all know, Rajamouli is a brand himself, and other than stars, the audience is attracted to his name as a director.
For Devara, there was no such backing as director Koratala Siva is not a known face outside the Telugu market. Even in the Telugu market, he was coming after the disaster of Acharya, so the film was a pure show of Jr NTR. NTR’s pull secured fantastic numbers in a couple of weeks. However, as word-of-mouth was mixed, the magnum opus failed to make it big in the long run.
In India, Devara wrapped up its run at 292.71 crores net at the Indian box office. Including taxes, it equals 345.39 crores gross. The breakeven in the domestic market was somewhere around 350 crores gross, but as we can see, it failed to meet that mark.
In overseas, Devara emerged as a winner as its breakeven was 56 crores gross and the film managed to make 80 crores gross.
Combining the Indian and overseas gross, the worldwide box office collection closed at 425.39 crores gross. The breakeven for the global collection was set at 406 crores gross. In that sense, it’s a decent success.
Overall, the film is a success in terms of recovery. However, going by the general box office rule, Devara failed to recover its budget of 300 crores through its domestic net earnings (292.71 crores), so it’s a flop affair.
Final collection breakdown of Devara:
India net- 292.71 crores
India gross- 345.39 crores
Overseas gross- 80 crores
Worldwide gross- 425.39 crores
