Kung Fu Panda 4 emerged as numero uno at the mainland China box office this weekend, which marked its official debut. The second position was occupied by the Taiwanese crime film The Pig, The Snake And The Pigeon, while the third place went to Dune 2.
Produced by DreamWorks Animation and distributed by Universal Pictures, the fourth installment of the much-loved franchise was placed in the fourth position last weekend, a week ahead of its official theatrical debut. But during this weekend, when the film witnessed full-fledged release, it grabbed the top spot.
As per the data given by Artisan Gateway, Kung Fu Panda 4 earned $14.7 million (RMB105 million) from this Friday to Sunday (opening weekend). Including previews from the previous weekend (where the film was placed in the fourth position), the film finished this weekend by amassing a total of $25.9 million (RMB184 million).
Notably, the film’s predecessor, Kung Fu Panda 3 finished its weekend in 2016 with $57.8 million, almost twice its outing. The main reason behind it was that it was a US-China production unlike Kung Fu Panda 4, which is a complete foreign production.
Coming to other films, The Pig, The Snake And The Pigeon did a business of $6.8 million for a cumulative of $84.6 million during this weekend. Dune 2 ended up earning $4.6 million for a cumulative total of $44.2 million. With this, the Dune sequel surpassed the Chinese lifetime of Dune’s first part, which earned $39.50 million in the lifetime run.
Dune 2 had launched in China two weeks ago, raking in a solid $19.9 million in just three days. This is particularly impressive because many Hollywood movies have struggled in China over the past three years, especially franchise titles. Those watching the saga unfold believe that the Dune sequel was somehow able to escape this rut because of its incredible visuals.
