Is Karan Johar The Real Flag Bearer Of Nepotism? Will He Able To Survive Without It? (Opinion)

In one of the episodes of Koffee with Karan in 2017, Kangana Ranaut appeared on the talk show with Saif Ali Khan and made some fierce statements about the host, Karan Johar. Kangana took everyone by surprise when she called Johar ‘the flag bearer of nepotism.’ She further added that Johar would play the role of an antagonist in her biopic who cannot tolerate outsiders in the industry. She called him ‘movie mafia’.

Karan himself is a product of nepotism in Bollywood. Karan’s father, Yash Johar was a producer in Bollywood, and his mother, Hiroo Johar is also a producer. Every young newcomer in Bollywood comes with a dream of getting opportunities and gaining as much fame as star kids. However, with such flag bearers of nepotism in the industry, the outsiders become the victims of discrimination and prejudice.

However, when asked in an interview about why he prefers working with star kids over talented outsiders, Karan Johar said that he does not make a cakewalk journey for star kids in the industry. He said that he introduced 21 debut directors. Out of which 16-17 are not ‘nepotistic’ young filmmakers. They are complete outsiders.

KJo said that he should get credit for launching talented outsiders. To be honest, even though he gives opportunities to outsiders as well, the preference given to star kids is evident. In the most recent incident, KJo reportedly preferred Janhvi Kapoor over Kartik Aaryan when there was a clash between the two actors while shooting for Dostana 2.

Almost a year ago, people thought that the death of Sushant Singh Rajput will mark the end of nepotism in Bollywood. However, the best opportunities are reserved for star kids.

Nepotism is so deeply rooted in the industry that star kids are proud of this phenomenon. In IIFA 2017, Saif Ali Khan alongside Varun Dhawan and Karan Johar shouted ‘nepotism Rocks’ on the stage, while hosting the show. It’s clear that KJo does flaunt his nepotistic approach with pride, but is he the only one? Obviously, not.

Remember actors like Arjun Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor, Sooraj Pancholi and too many others have not been launched by Karan Johar. It’s that he just loves playing it openly, thus gets trolled in return. Just to mention, the filmmaker has been successfully associated with Shah Rukh Khan, John Abraham, Sidharth Malhotra, Jacqueline Fernandez and several others, who don’t have a filmy background at all. So, if he decides, he can end the strange demonic phenomenon of nepotism (at least under his Dharma banner).
