The Trial of the Chicago 7 has managed to sweep away one of the most prestigious awards at the 2021’s Screen Actors Guild Awards aka SAG Awards. The award ceremony aired on Sunday (4th April) as a one-hour pre-taped virtual ceremony. It was aired on TBS and TNT.

The Guild’s topmost honour which is almost equivalent to the best picture prize, the Award for Best Ensemble, was won by The Trial of the Chicago 7. The award has given a great boost and confidence to filmmaker, Aaron Sorkin, for the Oscars. The win also marks a new victory for Netflix. It marks the first-ever victory of a Netflix movie in the Best Ensemble category. Two more films from Netflix were nominated- Da 5 Bloods and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.

Michael Keaton, who is also a part of the cast of The Trial of the Chicago 7, set a major record by becoming the first person ever to win three SAG Awards. He won Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Motion Picture. Previously, the awards he won in the same category for Birdman (2014) and Spotlight (2015).

Another huge change in the history of the SAG Awards occurred when the top four individual film honours were awarded to people of colour. The Best Actress award was presented to Viola Davis for her performance in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. Davis and Halle Berry are the only two black women to win this award. Also, Renee Zellweger and Viola Davis tie for most individual SAG awards won by any actress. Both of them have swept away three awards each until now.
