One such incident occurred in 1996 when the Sultan of Brunei invited Michael to give a performance on the occasion of his 50th birthday. The Sultan’s birthday was celebrated with great gusto and enthusiasm. Hassanal did not leave any opportunity to make the day ideal for himself. The birthday celebration had a guest list of 3000 people after removing many names and celebrations went on for two weeks. An amount of $27 million was spent to make the celebration special. 

Out of the total expenditure, $16 million were given to Michael Jackson. Yes, you read that right. He was paid this whopping amount as he performed at the Jerudong Amusement Park in the state. The performance was seen by more than 60,000 people. 

Further, it is learned that Jackson also gave two small performances for special guests of Sultan. Bolkiah was a huge fan of Jackson and wanted him to perform at his birthday celebration. Hence, he paid a hefty amount to him, for enjoying his world-class performance.

It is also known that a stadium was erected to carry the proceedings of the celebration smoothly since there was a huge gathering. The birthday dinner was so grand that it required 1778 rooms of the Sultan’s palace to accommodate people for the lavish dinner.
