Gangubai Kathiawadi has brought a big sigh of relief to the Bollywood industry and theatre owners. It was after the second wave of Covid, Sooryavanshi struck gold at the box office and gave a big boost, but things started going downhill when the third wave hit the country.
Alia Bhatt’s latest release has done a terrific job at the box office by making 47.31 crores in just 4 days. It was this notion that South has overtaken Bollywood at the ticket windows becoming prominent. But Alia’s film has proved that people love Bollywood films if made well.
Getting back to the point of box office collection, Alia and Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s combo has proved to be commercially viable so far. But will be good enough to make the film a clean box office Hit? Let’s find out the economics involved.
Budget of Gangubai Kathiawadi
Not officially out but if trade reports are to be believed, Gangubai rides on a huge budget of 100 crores. This involves publicity and advertising costs. We can say that Gangubai is a big-budget film. So yes, recovering such a budget and getting a clean Hit status is a tough task.
Will Gangubai Kathiawadi be able to earn Hit or Super-Hit status at the box office?
Going by a simple economical formula of theatrical business, a film needs to make 200% of its cost to achieve a Hit status and a bit more over 200% of its cost to become a Super-Hit. So, is that happening? We don’t think so.
Gangubai needs to earn 200 crores at the box office to become a Hit, which looks like an impossible task for the film. No, we aren’t looking down upon the film’s potential, but just look at the competition. There’s The Batman, Jhund arriving next week. Prabhas’ Radhe Shyam and then Akshay Kumar’s Bachchan Pandey coming back-to-back. All these movies will make the road tough for Alia Bhatt’s film.
As of now, it looks like Gangubai Kathiawadi might go past the 100 crore mark, and earn a little more over it. So yes, the film will be a clean success but might not become a Hit.
Changing model of the film’s business
Remember, now the movie business isn’t just related to theatrical earnings and satellite rights. Now, there’s another aspect of OTT streaming rights that have got added. So, there are more things involved that earn investors a good chunk of money. So, considering all that, Gangubai Kathiawadi is already in a profit zone.
