Summer has truly arrived, with all guns blazing, as regional cinema is rocking the box office. Let’s go to the north for example. The latest release Shinda Shinda No Papa has been attracting crowds like no other. Much of the film’s success can be attributed to the sheer number of positive reviews and the strong word-of-mouth it has been enjoying. The laugh-riot, released May 10, stars Gippy Grewal, Shinda Grewal, and Hina Khan in pivotal roles, and is helmed by Amarpreet GS Chhabra (most recently known for his series Choti Sarrdaarni, streaming on JioCinema).
Set in Canada and India, the movie follows the lives of Gopi (Gippy), his wife, and their mischievous 10-year-old son, Shinda. With a desi twist to the popular rhyme ‘Johnny, Johnny, Yes Papa’, the movie delivers a unique premise and a rollercoaster of emotions and humor, all while exploring the complexities of modern parenting.
In its opening weekend, Shinda Shinda No Papa has grossed an impressive Rs 12.6 crores at the worldwide box office. The family movie collected roughly Rs 0.9 crores on its first day in India and continued to attract crowds over the weekend, for a domestic collection of Rs 4.75 crores by the end of Monday.
Gippy and Shinda, the dynamic father-son duo, bring a delightful chemistry to the screen that only an actual father and son pair could. Gippy, a seasoned actor and singer, is already well-loved in Punjabi cinema for his versatile performances. Now, going by how well his performance sits within the film’s humorous tone, Shinda seems to be following in his father’s footsteps with instinctive ease.
With such a strong opening and steady box office performance, Shinda Shinda No Papa looks like it’s poised to become a significant success in Punjabi cinema this year.
