Kangana Ranaut won Best Actress for her performances in Manikarnika and Panga
The 67th National Film Awards results for movies that were released in the year 2019 were announced on Monday. The award for Best Actor is shared between Manoj Bajpayee for his Hindi film Bhonsle and Dhanush for the Tamil movie Asuran. Kangana Ranaut won the award for Best Actress for her spectacular performance in the Hindi film Manikarnika- The Queen of Jhansi and Panga.
There is a surge in the number of movies from south India winning the awards. As many as 15 films from the south film industry won top awards in various popular categories. Non-feature films also managed to bag awards. Hence, it would not be a mistake to say that the south film industry dominated the awards ceremony on Monday. The awards were scheduled for May 2019. However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, they were delayed.
The award for Best Supporting Actor was won by actor Vijay Sethupathi for his performance in the Tamil movie Super Deluxe. The award for Best Feature Film was swept away by the Malayalam movie, Marakkar: Arabikadalinte Simham. It is a historical war drama movie that has not been released yet. Actor Mohanlal was in the lead of the film and the movie was scheduled to release last year. However, now, it is due to release on April 13, 2021. The movie also won awards for Best Costume and effects.
Dhanush won his second National Award for Best Actor. Vijay Sethupathi won his first National Award for Super Deluxe. He played the role of a transgender and threw light on abuse, violence, and discrimination faced by the LGBTQ community.
The highlight of the award ceremony was the awards for Best Hindi Film which is taken home by the team of Chhichhore. The director of the film, Nitesh Tiwari, actors Shraddha Kapoor and Varun Sharma dedicated the award to the brilliant late actor, Sushant Singh Rajput.
