Anees Bazmee delivers an entertaining ride!
Cast- Kartik Aaryan, Tabu, Kiara Advani, Rajpal Yadav, Milind Gunaji, Sanjay Mishra & others
Director- Anees Bazmee
Release date- 20th May 2022
What’s the basic storyline? – Just like the prequel, here too there’s a spirit of Monjulika trapped inside a haveli, which is in Bhawanigarh of Rajasthan. Of course, everyone is warned to avoid opening the doors of a room in which the spirit has been locked.
The haveli belongs to the family of Reet (Kiara Advani), who, with the help of Ruhan (Kartik Aaryan), disguises her family that she’s dead. She does it for a reason, but things get messier when Chhote Pandit (Rajpal Yadav) sees her in the haveli. To avoid being caught, Reet has no other option but to unlock the room in which Monjulika is trapped and be hidden.
Reet believes that there’s no such spirit and it’s all just stories that have been made by people. Sh*t just gets real when Monjulika, who is ready to cause destruction, makes her presence felt.
Why the spirit of Monjulika was trapped for years? What’s her motive? Will she destroy everything? Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 answers it all.
Performances – Kartik Aaryan as Ruhan has nailed his character. He’s likeable and convincingly funny with his good comic timing. Apart from being funny, his act in the climax just shows how much he has improved as an actor. On top of all, it’s good to see that the actor hasn’t succumbed to the pressure of replacing Akshay Kumar and managed to leave his own mark.
Kiara Advani is pretty and her screen presence is pleasing. Her chemistry with Kartik Aaryan is refreshing to watch. She doesn’t have much to add but plays good support in the film.
Tabu is the show stealer! She once again proves her acting prowess and here, she’s totally in a driving seat. At one moment she looks normal, at the very next moment, you’ll be scared by just watching her cold-blooded expressions. Okay, now enough said! Let’s just avoid more spoilers and twists, go watch the film and you will know why she deserves every praise.
Speaking of our beloved Rajpal Yadav, it’s good to see him back in old form. He’s terrific as Chhote Pandit, making it hard to control our laugh. Sanjay Mishra too has been in top form as always. Give him anything and he’ll still make you laugh like a mad. Others including Milind Gunaji and Amar Upadhyay are decent in their roles.
Direction, music & much more – It was a tough task in hand of not letting down the fans of Akshay Kumar’s Bhool Bhulaiyaa. If not great, Anees Bazmee has managed to do a good job by keeping the element of horror as well as humour intact. Of course, he has done it in his own trademark style.
While there’s humour throughout, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 does scares when needed. So, in an attempt to keep comedy, Bazmee hasn’t compromised on his scary elements. Yes, there are cliches, but the film is so engaging that you won’t mind it that much.
Music isn’t remarkable like the prequel with just the title track (recreation of Hare Ram Hare Ram) being an enjoyable one.
VFX work would have been much better. There are a couple of scenes where twins (no spoiler here) don’t really look the same and you can easily make out the difference that another person has been used for a shot, while in other scenes, they look ditto copy.
On a conclusive note – Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 is good enjoyment for families as it’s a clean entertainer with perfect doses of comedy and horror. Don’t expect much, just go for it and enjoy!
Popcorn score – 6 out of 10
