The nominations of Oscar 2021, interestingly, have two men of Asian descent who will be fighting for the honour of the Best Actor. One of the two men being Riz Ahmed for his magnificent performance in Sound of Metal. The list of nominees left everyone flabbergasted, especially the groundbreaking number of nominations for people of colour such as Chloe Zhao.
Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Nick Jonas announced the nominations for the 93rd edition of the Academy Awards on Monday. This year’s nominations have recorded history in the Oscars. Not only have they given space to wide diversity they have also marked many firsts. The list of nominees happens to bring novelty in many ways. From two men of Asian descent to a Muslim actor contesting for Best Actor, here’s is a list of the firsts that the nominations list brought with it.
Riz Ahmed is the first Muslim to be nominated for best lead actor Oscar
Riz Ahmed has been nominated for his stellar acting skills in the movie ‘Sound of Metal’. The movie released in 2019 and left everyone amazed with Ahmed’s performance. He is the first Muslim and the first actor of Pakistani descent to be nominated in the mentioned category.Â
Chloe Zhao is nominated for Best Director
Chloe Zhao has marked history by becoming the first woman of colour to be nominated in the directing category. Also, only two prestigious women have been nominated in the Best Director category out of which one is Chloe Zhao.
Apart from this, Chloe Zhao’s ‘Nomadland’ and Lee Issac Chung’s ‘Minari’ are the first two movies directed by Asian artists to be nominated in the Best Picture category.Â
Alongside Riz, Steven Yeun becomes the first Asian-American actor to be nominated for the Best Actor. All these variations have marked the rise in Asian nominations in Oscars.
