Now, in 2024, the flavor has changed as horror films have been enjoying tremendous responses from the audience. The latest success of Stree 2 has reinstated the fact that there’s a strong appetite for supernatural thrillers and horror comedies. Before this, even Munjya and Shaitaan earned big moolah. Ajay Devgn and R Madhavan’s Shaitaan was the first hit of Bollywood in 2024. Released on March 8, the film opened to decent reviews from critics, and even the audience gave a thumbs up to it. Right from the opening day, this supernatural horror thriller was a big surprise at the Indian box office. Made at a moderate budget of 85 crores, it made 151 crores net in the domestic market.
After Shaitaan, Abhay Verma and Sharvari Wagh’s Munjya stunned everyone with its fantastic performance. Released amid a negligible buzz on June 7. It opened to good reviews and word-of-mouth and later gained momentum due to it being a part of Maddock Supernatural Universe. Made at a controlled cost of 30 crores, this horror comedy amassed 108 crores at the Indian box office in the lifetime run.
With Shaitaan and Munjya’s success, the horror genre was surrounded by a solid buzz, and Rajkummar Rao-Shraddha Kapoor’s Stree 2 capitalized on it. The film, being a sequel to a successful film and a part of Maddock Supernatural Universe, enjoyed organic hype on the ground level and the result of the same is now getting reflected through unprecedented numbers at the Indian box office.
Made at a moderate budget of 60 crores, Stree 2 has earned a staggering 204 crores so far in India.
If we combine the budgets of all Bollywood horror films released in 2024 so far, it equals 175 crores. And against this cost, they have minted a cumulative collection of 463 crores, which equals impressive returns of 164.57%.
From here, Stree is expected to add 250 crores more to its collection, taking the cumulative tally to 713 crores. If the content clicks well, Kartik Aaryan’s Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 is expected to cover 287 crores, to unleash a mega milestone of 1000 crores at the Indian box office.
