Mani Ratnam’s ambitious film, Ponniyin Selvan 1 aka PS 1, is doing terrific business at the box office. Despite the mixed word-of-mouth, the film isn’t showing any sign of slowing down anytime soon. In a meantime, it has already gone past the break-even in Telugu states and is now earning profits.
As revealed by himself, Mani Ratnam had been working on the concept since a long time and spent a lot of time doing research work. With the current trend at ticket windows, it seems that the hard work of Mani sir is paying off.
Ponniyin Selvan 1 released on 30th September in a pan-India manner. It arrived in five Indian languages- Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada. As expected, the Tamil version is going full throttle. But now, Telugu version too has joined the party. Yes, you read that right! PS 1 is already a success in Telugu version.
It’s learnt that Ponniyin Selvan 1 was priced at 10 crores for two Telugu states- Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Now according to trade reports flowing in, PS 1 has done a business of 12.30 crores from these two states. It means the film has already made a profit of 2.30 crores by surpassing the break-even of 10 crores. Truly a celebration time of distributors there!
Speaking about the other languages, the Hindi version is showing a good response and has already crossed the 10 crore mark. However, its break-even is yet to be known. In Kannada and Malayalam, Ponniyin Selvan 1 is average so far.
Remember, even though the film is turning out to successful in other languages, the main Tamil version is yet to get a success verdict at the box office. Let’s see how far the film goes.
