Ajay Devgn holds the 'fort' of 2020 with Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior!
After a startling box office performance of Bollywood films in 2019, 2020 was expected to be a huge one. And for that matter, Ajay Devgn starrer hit the bull’s eye by enjoying a blockbuster response. No doubt, the Covid-19 pandemic created a ruckus for the cinema industry but before the pandemic restrictions, the image wasn’t either favourable. Apart from Ajay’s periodic drama, all other releases didn’t make a mark.
In today’s piece, we’ll be taking a look at all theatrical releases of 2020 and their performance at the box office.
This Deepika Padukone and Vikrant Massey starrer was in the news for all the right reasons initially. The film garnered negativity due to DP’s visit to JNU (students attacked row) as her image was portrayed to be of anti-national by one section of netizens. It did affect the film and from collections, it was quite visible. Despite a decent word of mouth, the real-life inspired drama made just 29 crores at the box office. It was declared as a flop.
Ajay Devgn and Saif Ali Khan starrer Tanhaji is the only hit of 2020. It started the year on a bang and caused a major dent to DP’s Chhapaak in a clash. Surpassing all the expectations, this periodic drama earned a whopping sum of 280 crores.
It featured Kangana Ranaut in a lead role. The film had a decent content to offer and that’s it. As the film didn’t have any extraordinary, it got destroyed by Tanhaji wave. As per trade estimates, the film made 29 crores and was a flop.
The film featuring Varun Dhawan, Shraddha Kapoor and Nora Fatehi in key roles was long in the making. It had a good pre-release hype and songs too emerged chartbusters. But in the end, the content failed to meet the expectations and the film ended up collecting 75 crores. Another flop!
Malang benefited from a good cast of Anil Kapoor, Aditya Roy Kapur, Disha Patani and others. This crime thriller had good content to offer (although a bit niche) and music. It turned out to be an average affair at the box office by making 59 crores.
It was a treat for all Saif Ali Khans who love him in a uber-cool avatar. His chemistry was good with debutante Alaya F. Tabu too was the icing on the cake. Unfortunately, despite good content, the film fell flat at the ticket windows by just making 29 crores. Flop!
It had the backing of Vidhu Vinod Chopra with a backdrop of the sensitive issue of Kashmiri Pandit. This one too had decent content but couldn’t make it big. It earned 7 crores and was declared as a flop.
The audience got divided into two extreme poles for this Kartik Aaryan and Sara Ali Khan starrer. To be honest, it had a niche but really good content. Unfortunately, it fell like ninepins post a good opening. It made just 38 crores and was a major flop.
It enjoyed a good promotion due to Vicky Kaushal and Karan Johar’s name attached to it. But on the content front, it was just an average affair. With a sum of 31.25 crores, the film turned out to be a flop.
It had a dream cast of Ayushmann Khurrana and Jitendra Kumar along with Neena Gupta and Gajraj Rao. As per audience feedback, the film based on same s*x marriage wasn’t packaged in an appealing manner. Also, contrary to Ayushmann’s Dream Girl and other hits, it had forced humour. The film was an average affair with a sum of 63 crores.
Taapsee Pannu and Anubhav Sinha’s collab impressed its targeted audience. But despite having potential, the film didn’t make much of a moolah. It ended its run at 32 crores with an average tag.
Unlike its predecessor, this Tiger Shroff starrer failed in fetching a positive response from mass centres. Thanks to Tiger’s loyal following and his action, the action thriller survived up to 98 crores. It was an average affair.
Sadly, this film turned out to be the last one for the late Irrfan Khan. Unlike its first instalment, Angrezi Medium was good but in parts. Also, just after few days of its release, the pandemic scare was in the air which damaged it with cancelled shows and low footfalls. It made just 11 crores and was a box office flop.
This film featuring Diljit Dosanjh, Fatima Sana Shaikh and Manoj Bajpayee is the only notable release that arrived after theatres reopened. Till now, it has made around 3 crores and is on its way to emerge as a flop.
So, that’s it! This is how 2020 has been for Bollywood at the box office. Despite Tanhaji, every other release has failed in making a commercial mark.
