Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan 1 aka PS 1 is another biggie of Indian cinema, slated to release this Friday (30th September). The film stars big names like Chiyaan Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Trisha and others. Originally a Tamil film, this magnum opus is witnessing a pan-India release. Let’s see how it is performing in day 1 advance booking at the box office.
The film belongs to the period action genre and the Indian audience has an affinity towards such films, if made well. It is said to be amongst the most expensive Tamil films. In fact, it is reportedly only next to Rajinikanth and Akshay Kumar‘s 2.0 humongous budget, which was originally a Tamil film. With so much money involved, is the film living up to its expectations? Let’s find out.
As per trade reports flowing in, Ponniyin Selvan 1 has accumulated 1.60 crores (Tamil and Telugu) gross through advance booking for day 1, which is terrific. The film has already crossed the mark of 80,000 tickets with Tamil version making up for 90% of it. Given the fact that booking went live just recently, the response looks really impressive and there’s clearly a good buzz, at least in Tamil markets.
As of now, the advance booking for Hindi, Malayalam and Kannada languages is yet to open and it will be interesting to see if it matches the intense buzz of Tamil version. In Hindi market, Ponniyin Selvan 1 will be clearly dominated by Hrithik Roshan and Saif Ali Khan’s Vikram Vedha. So this Mani Ratnam’s film will need to carry extraordinary content to battle it out with Hrithik and Saif’s film.
Meanwhile, even though the day 1 looking good for Ponniyin Selvan 1, the main worry is about how it will stay on day 2. In the past, we have seen all Tamil biggies dropping sharply on day 2 with Kamal Haasan led Vikram being an exception.
