Rajinikanth’s Vettaiyan has closed its theatrical run, and it was on the cards as it is now available on OTT. The film had its share of merits, but unfortunately, it failed to meet its mammoth expectations. Considering the exorbitant costs involved and the strong face value, the biggie was expected to rake in big numbers, but in reality, it has wrapped up below 275 crores gross at the worldwide box office. Let’s find out where it stands in its final collection update!
The Kollywood investigation drama was released in theatres on October 10. Upon its release, the film received mixed reviews from critics. While performances of the entire cast were praised, it was criticized for its screenplay and for being an average-looking affair despite having big guns like Rajinikanth and Amitabh Bachchan and a brilliant filmmaker like TJ Gnanavel on the board. Among the ticket-buying audience, it had a decent word-of-mouth.
Vettaiyan isn’t an out-and-out commercial entertainer of Rajinikanth and that’s said to be one of the reasons why it failed to garner major footfalls. As a result, it ended its theatrical journey in India by earning just 149 crores net (all languages), which equals 175.82 crores gross. In the overseas market, too, the performance wasn’t on the expected lines and it wrapped up at 84 crores gross. Combining both Indian and domestic gross, the film’s final collection at the worldwide box office stands at 259.82 crores gross.
