Kamal Haasan’s Indian 2 has ended its theatrical journey on a disastrous note. Right from the trailer release, the magnum opus was witnessing an underwhelming buzz, which was later reflected in a start that was much below expectations. The poor content made things worse, resulting in a film wrapping up its run at the worldwide box office within a month. Considering the mammoth expectations and cost involved, the film has been declared a disaster. Keep reading to know about its final collection!
The Tamil vigilante film is a remake of the 1996 blockbuster, Indian. It marked the reunion of director Shankar and Kamal Haasan, and considering the legacy of the predecessor, expectations were really high for the sequel. However, upon its release on July 12, the film opened to mostly negative reviews from critics and even the audience gave a big thumbs down to the content. As a result, it failed to show any kind of momentum at the worldwide box office.
After a start of over 50 crores gross, Indian 2 came crashing down from the second day onwards. Eventually, the poor word-of-mouth made things worse. At the worldwide box office, the biggie ended its journey at 150.76 crores gross. In India, it wrapped up at just 82 crores net, which equals 96.76 crores in gross collection. In overseas, too, it underperformed a big time by earning just 54 crores gross.
The only positive for Indian 2 is that it is currently Kollywood’s highest-grossing film of 2024. However, by tomorrow, Dhanush’s Raayan will dethrone this Kamal Haasan starrer from the top spot.
For those who don’t know, this Shankar directorial was reportedly made at a huge budget of 250 crores, and against this, it earned just 82 crores at the Indian box office. So, it ended up facing a deficit of a whopping 168 crores, resulting in a nightmare for the makers.
Let’s hope the duo of Shankar and Kamal Haasan bounce back with Indian 3!
